By now I’m sure most everyone has at least heard of Focus on the Family chairperson Dr. James Dobson‘s so-called “Letter from 2012.” You can read the entire diatribe here. To be honest I haven’t read it all — based on what I know of Dobson and his think tank, I consider it to be a colossal waste of time.

I won’t take the time to critque it or add my comment (there are some good ones worth reading here and here).

Being the good Web2.0 junkie that I am, I created a Wordle cloud from the text of the letter.  It is below.  Pretty revealing I think.

Here’s something else that’s revealing … and pitifully sad.

My husband works in a very small company (defense/intelligence contractor). He’s the #2 guy in the company. The company owner (#1) is a very conservative Christian (FOTF, reformed Calvinist, etc.). Now, we’re actually very good friends with the #1 guy and his wife. Have kids the same age, etc.

My husband and #1Guy are on a business trip this week to Dallas and hubs overheard a phone conversation between #1Guy and his wife. Apparently wife was having yet another panicky moment over the idea that Obama would be elected. She is just sure that everything she stands for is going to be taken away from her. She literally cannot sleep at night because she is so afraid of this election.

That’s insane … I’m so sick of this … I’m done with the fear. Didn’t Jesus come so that we didn’t have to fear anymore. So James Dobson … SIT down and SHUT UP!!!

sonja – sigh……that is sad. and frustrating.

i don’t know what is more disheartening to me, the fact that the extreme right continues market a narrative of fear and employ scare tactics, or the fact that a lot of people continue to buy into it.

Blake thanks for posting this i may have never known about it otherwise: I spent about 5 to 10 minutes scanning the letter and its just the biggest load of crap i have seen written during this election, dobson gets the prize. what is sad is that a lot people read dobson as Gospel(if you”ll pardon the expression). its this type of thinking by him and the recent Rick Warren remarks on prop 8 that have this country very backwards.

Allow me to vent here for a second:

Just throw this letter on the pile of reasons that I don’t go out and proclaim that I’m a Christian to everyone I meet. Honestly, I wouldn’t take Christians seriously if this kind of abusive rhetoric was being spewed in the name of Christ.

chris – thanks for stopping by and responding. i agree with you. it is upsetting to me because dobson and myself get painted with the same brush and i don’t find his statement to christian in the least. if anything it is anti-christian. but he has clout and a public forum to speak from. and people listen. that gives jesus, christianity, and religion a very bad name.
