It’s only a matter of time

How will support for same-sex marriage change over time?  Significantly.  The generation gap is huge right now.  Some gurus at Colombia University have broken down the statistics by age and state.  Money quote: “If policy were set by state-by-state majorities of those 65 or older, none would allow same-sex marriage. If policy were set by those under 30, only 12 states would not allow-same-sex marriage.”

Could be just a matter of time. Public acceptance of cohabitation, non-marital sexual relations, immodesty and the hypersexualization of society have certainly increased sharply over the past decades. No reason to think that the trend won't continue in Western culture.

Maybe young people will mature as they age, but there sure are a bunch of aging boomers who haven't. Some will grow up, though. I was kind of a dumbass when I was in my 20's.

If us old folks would just go ahead and die, the “matter of time” would be shorter, wouldn't it? Now where did I put my bifocals. My addled old brain can't recall.

    Fascinating graphic.

I'd love to see another one that looks at how opinions change within an age cohort as it advances through the lifespan.

I'd also be interested to know something about intensity? Do the people who support gay marriage get as fired up about it as those who oppose it – or vice versa. A passionate minority can affect policy in outsized ways when faced with a largely luke warm majority.
