A question for French readers

View Comments

I am taking a free, no-credit reading French course this semester.  The primary text is Karl Sandburg’s French for Reading.  Languages are not my strong suit, so I am hoping to obtain some French texts to begin working through on my own.  I am wondering if anyone might have some suggestions.  Obviously I am not looking for the complexity and difficulty of, say, Derrida (though I hope to get there at some point!).  Something relatively easy and straightforward would be best.  It would be even better if it were related to theological, biblical, or philosophical studies, but I doubt that those areas will be best to start with.

Thoughts?

  1. i know there are bilingual novels out there (especially floating around canada) where the author leaves certain characters untranslated. I think that would be an excellent place to begin. Then you have help with context from the dialog contributions of the english speaking characters. I don't really know where to point you but i'm sure a quick search would get you there.

  2. Blake, I would recommend picking up a French Bible. If you read a passage in English and then simply read through it in French, without worrying about the words you don't know etc… if you read a chapter (or a shorter passage) once a day like that, it will help you start to get an intuitive feel for the language.

  3. Thanks, Kevin. That's a great idea.
