Falling into the heresy of orthodoxy?
Dr. Philip Clayton thinks we have:
“It’s not that hard. If you go [to scripture] with new eyes, it’s a living and vibrant text about a living and vibrant God. [...] We have fallen into the heresy of orthodoxy.”
His larger point is of course that we have allowed our tacit theological assumptions determine how we approach the text and how we think about God. I don’t think we can ever completely free ourselves from our interpretive biases, try as we might. But we can free ourselves from the old, tired theologies of the past (which were really important and revolutionary in their time) and allow the text to marinate in our culture and our context. Then we can better understand what it might mean to be Christian here and now.
I think he may be on to something.

Favorite Super Bowl ad?

A history of the Internet (1957-2009)
If, God forbid, the internet suddenly ceased to exist today I think I would start a revolution. I, like many of us, am very dependent on the internet. I use it for just about everything: communication, shopping, news, reading, etc.
But other than knowing that it wasn’t invented by Al Gore and that the internet and the world wide web are not the same thing, I know next to nothing about the history and development of the internet.
So, here is a brief history of the internet, going all the way back to 1957.

Genocide day video: declaration of Human Rights
Hat tip to Hacking Christianity for this video portraying the text of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights set to music.
I thought I’d go ahead and post it today rather than later since today is the so-called “Columbus Day” in which Americans of all political stripes and social studies teachers across the country glorify a mass murderer and credit him with having “discovered a New World” when in fact he systematically exterminated and enslaved native peoples in the name — in American hindsight at least — of a dubious metanarrative of progress and enlightenment.
